Energy bills for a school in Merseyside are being reduced by £7500 a year by converting from oil to gas using Potterton Commercial boilers and water heaters from Andrews Water Heaters.

As part of a switch from oil to gas, Potterton Commercial gas-fired condensing boilers water heaters from Andrews Water Heaters have been installed at Range High School at Formby in Merseyside. This secondary co-educational comprehensive school has around 1300 pupils, 250 of whom are sixth-form students. The new plant will reduce the school’s fuel bill by around £7500 a year.

The system was designed by Capita Symonds on behalf of Sefton Council. Existing space and water-heating equipment has been replaced by four Potterton Commercial Eurocondense three 300 kW floor-standing condensing boilers and two Andrews Hiflo 81/264 gas-fired storage water heaters. The water heaters each have a capacity of 370 l, heat input of 80 kW and a recovery rate of 960 l/h through a temperature rise of 56 K.

The new boilers serve existing radiators and air-handling units. The hot water is for wash hand basins, showers laboratories and kitchens throughout the school.

The Eurocondense boilers are installed in a bank of four side by side with individual flues through the flat roof and pipework runs through a service duct to the school.

The water heaters are in the same plant room. Individual unit controls are connected to a central control panel in the boiler house, which is linked to a computer in the site manager’s office.

Installation work was carried out by James Mercer Group of Ormskirk.
