Lamp conversion halves energy use for lighting

Energys Group has helped a school halve its lighting energy consumption by using its Save It Easy convertors to enable old fluorescent lighting to be replaced with energy-efficient T5 lamps. The energy saving amounts to nearly 11.4 MWh a year, a cost saving of £1365 a year and 6.16 t of CO2.

Outdated fluorescent lamps in the school buildings were identified as a major energy drain. Chris Mason, vice-chair of governors at Scott-Broadwood Church of England School, We’d already introduced several initiatives to save energy. However, we felt it was time to take on a bigger project, in order to tackle the problem of our high energy bills. Upgrading our lighting seemed like the obvious step forward.

‘We discovered that energy-efficient T5 lamps are incompatible with older-style fittings, so we looked at replacing all of the light fittings across the school’s two sites with brand new fittings. Unfortunately, this raised the additional costs of decoration after the installation, plus potential disruption to the running of the school. We were keen to find a simpler way to upgrade our lighting.’

The Save It Easy plug-in T5 adaptor solved the problem, enabling new lamps to be installed into the existing light fittings. Energys supplied the converters and also installed them. In all, 312 lamps were converted to T5 equivalents.
