Efficiently controlled by a Priva system, the Eden Project in Cornwall.

Three years on since the installation at the Eden project in Cornwall of intelligent BMS technology from Priva, cost savings of almost £458 000 have been achieved, corresponding to 781 t of carbon dioxide. The success of this installation is helping the Eden project meet ambitious targets of cutting CO2 emissions by 30% by 2014 and by a further 50% by 2015 — a total of 65%.

The previous BMS installation comprised 49 separate control systems. Many controllers were no longer supported by their manufacture, prompting the search for a single system that could control every part of this extensive site in Cornwall.

Priva has its origins in creating optimal greenhouse environments and worked with building-controls specialist CambridgeHOK, a major manufacturer of commercial and research greenhouses. CambridgeHOK provided bespoke engineering and programming of the Priva system to meet Eden’s very precise requirements.

The savings include £414 860 on electricity and £43 059 on gas over the last three years.

Matt Hastings, energy manager at the Eden Project, says, ‘Improving energy efficiency and overhauling the building controls at the Eden Project was always going to be a complicated and daunting task. Priva Building Intelligence and CambridgeHOK provided the depth of understanding to make the project into a reality. The result is a site that is streamlined, allowing for better communication between all parts of the Eden Project, while also using dramatically less energy.’
