Reggiani Lighting is a star performer at Glasgow’s transformed Theatre Royal.

The transformation of the Theatre Royal in Glasgow includes Reggiani Lighting’s Mosaic range of luminaires. This energy-saving lighting solution also succeeded in showcasing the architectural design of the venue while also providing the necessary flexibility for its varied usage.

The Theatre Royal opened in 1867. It has been owned by Scottish Opera since 1974 and is used for a variety of productions — including opera, ballet, comedy, musicals and drama.

The lighting was specified by Max Fordham in its capacity as M&E consultant with responsibility for the lighting design. The two companies worked together to achieve a solution of energy-efficient LEDs and metal-halide fittings that would also set off the new architectural concept.

The theatre roof terrace area is lit using twin-lamp Mosaic recessed luminaires. They use a mixture of 70 W CDM-T G12 metal-halide lamps with an 88° beam angle and 35 W CDM-T G12 lamps with a 74° beam angle. The fittings are finished in black and have a non-standard rich-gold reflector to reduce the colour temperature of the light output.

For the foyer and atrium exit points, black-finish Mosaic fittings with 14 W LEDs were used.

For individual balcony spotlight areas, single Mosaic 14 W LED fittings with Reggiani’s interchangeable optic system were installed.
