Gilberts helps deliver natural ventilation for new primary school

The natural-ventilation strategy developed for this new Catholic primary school in Poplar, London, with the help of Gilberts of Blackpool is designed to provide the appropriate level of fresh air without excessive air leakage, bearing in mind the natural tendency of the building’s wooden fame to expand and contract. This new 4500 m2 3-storey school is made entirely from wood (cross-laminated timber) and has attained a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating through its use of sustainable materials, high insulation levels and natural ventilation.

Gilberts worked with M&E consultant Carmel and architect Green Tea to develop the natural-ventilation strategy.

Each classroom in the 500-place building has glazed-in louvres with high-efficiency insulated dampers, a row of heating coils and attenuators. Air is extracted at high level on the opposite side of the teaching space.
