The National Trust is installing a biomass boiler at its Polesden Lacey Edwardian house and estate in Surrey to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% compared to the current oil-fired system. The work is being carried out by Baystar for the estate, which has been reliant on up to 60 000 l of oil a year to heat the house, making it one of the largest uses of oil in the NTís London and south-east region.

The project aspires to source woodchip from the estate and surrounding properties in the future. The aim is to become self-sufficient in terms of fuel supply.

The biomass system will generate 897 MWh of energy a year to heat the house, cafe, gardenerís office and four cottages.

Over the last six years, Polesden Lacey has halved its energy demands by upgrading the BMS controlling heating in the house and through a range of simple measures.
