Energy-efficient close-control air conditioning

Uniflair’s Leonardo 2 Evolution range of close-control air-conditioning units for data centres incorporates a series of energy-saving features.

Electronic expansion valves are standard with all direct-expansion units — air- or water-cooled, twin-cool or free-cooling versions. These valves enable low refrigerant condensing pressures to be used for much of the year, increasing the COP. Average annual energy consumption is reduced by 8%.

Electronically commutated DC fan motors are standard on all V-series units, offering speed control. Depending on the model, fan-motor power is reduced by 35 to 60% compared to standard induction motors.

E-series versions incorporate glycol-cooled condensers and a second cooling coil interlaced with the main evaporator coil. When the glycol is cooler than the return-air temperature to the roof unit, it is circulated through the second coil to provide partial or total free cooling. Based on meteorological data for London, energy savings are over 40% a year.
