BESCA sets up self-certification scheme for HVACR work

Published:  21 May, 2006

Businesses working in commercial and domestic heating, ventilating, air-conditioning and refrigeration can now certify their work online through BESCA, Building Engineering Services Accreditation Ltd.

BESCA is authorised by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and is the only competency scheme able to certify that commercial HVACR work complies with the new Building Regulations in England and Wales.

The system eradicates the need to involve building-control departments for local authorities and will help save time and money on local-authority inspections and fees. Qualified accredited certifiers will be able to self-certify that work complies with Building Regulations, quickly and online.

The BESCA web site (www.besca.org.uk) enables businesses to register details of jobs, print controlled compliance certificates for clients/customers and call up records of old jobs.

Although there will be phased implementation for new works, it is likely that all maintenance and replacement work affecting energy performance must be notified.

Bill Belshaw, chairman of BESCA, says, ‘With improved compliance, it is hoped that this scheme will help promote good practice. We also believe businesses will really benefit, as there is no requirement to have work inspected by a Building Control Inspector, potentially saving valuable time and money on inspections and/or fees.’
