Weatherite helps Eurofighter crews go green
Published: August 2006
As part of a contract worth over £100 000, Weatherite has replaced R22 air-conditioning systems at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire for the UK’s first operational Eurofighter Typhoon Squadron. 16 comfort-cooling units using R22 have been replaced with a series of ceiling- and wall-mounted units providing heating and cooling and using HFC refrigerants R410A and R407C. Mike Turton of Weatherite explains, ‘The installation is part of national policy to replace all existing air-conditioning units in Government buildings with equipment using environmentally friendly refrigerants.’ The project included the recovery and disposal of the redundant R22 units. Other replacement air-conditioning units were installed at the satellite sites of Wainfleet and Donna Nook, which serve as control towers and observation posts for the RAF’s bombing ranges on the east coast.
