HVCA president Mike McCloskey (right) presents the HVCA Outstanding Service Award to Iain Coates for his work as chief negotiator for the Operative National Agreement.

Iain Coates has received this year’s Outstanding Service Award of the Heating & Ventilating Contractors’ Association.

He has served on the association’s council since 1997 and has been chief negotiator for the Operative National Agreement — described by HVCA’s president Mike McCloskey as ‘arguably one of the most complex and influential roles in the mechanical services industry’.

He presided over a modernisation of the operative grade structure that led to the implanting of a genuinely competence-based culture. He also managed the move away form time-and-a-half and double-time concepts for overtime payments and dealt, successfully and creatively, with the long-standing union claim for a higher pay rate for London-based operatives.
