Daikin VRV systems provide air conditioning for London Heritage gem

Daikin VRV air-conditioning systems with heat recovery provide both heating and cooling for the refurbishment of 41-43 Brook Street in London.

Helping to bring one of Londonís architectural gems of the early 18th century firmly into the 21st century is the installation of 10 Daikin VRV air-conditioning systems. 41-43 brook Street is part of the original Grosvenor Estate is now operated as a major investment client contact centre by a leading bank. It is nearing the completion of an extensive upgrade of its mechanical and electrical services.

Designed and specified by consulting engineers Hurley Palmer Flatt of Purley, the new services include heat-recovery VRV air conditioning installed by Daikin D1 installer Capri Mechanical Services of Chelmsford.

The building has four storeys and a basement. It is divided into two, with the original Brook Street aspect and other areas built in the 1980s at the rear forming a U shape around a full-height 3-sided atrium and a ground-level courtyard.

On the ground and first floors of the front of the building are traditional-style lounges, drawing rooms, meeting rooms, executive offices and reception. with cellular rooms at the rear for meeting customers. The second, third and fourth floors have open-plan offices. The basement houses s staff rest room, communications room, storage areas and car park.

The air conditioning comprises 10 VRV 3-pipe systems with cooling capacities from 33.5 to 44.5 kW and heating from 37.5 to 50 kW. The roof-mounted condensing units are lined to 119 indoor units comprising ceiling ducted and floor-standing fan-coil units.

The building was previously air conditioned by a 4-pipe water-based fan-coil system. The original architectural enclosures for the fan-coil units on all five floors of the front elevation have been retained and now house Daikin vertical chassis units. The pipework is laid in the floor voids, with special arrangements for access to the branch selector boxes.

The new fan-coil units in the ceiling voids of the five floors to the rear are ducted direct to linear diffuser grilles in the ceilings of the various rooms and offices.

Primary-circuit tempered fresh air for all indoor units is supplied via new high-efficiency air-handling units in plant rooms at the rear of the building. Extract is via dummy sections of the diffuser slot and louvre-face diffusers in the ceiling.

The old chillers and boilers of the previous air-conditioning system haven been removed to make room for the VRV condensing units.

Overall control of the system is provided by Daikin I-controller linked to a Trend BMS via a Lon gateway interface connected to a compass point controller.
