Heating and DHW systems using Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pumps supplied by Space Air will reduce carbon emissions by 42% for the development of holiday homes at Wiltshire Leisure Village.

Ground-source heat pumps are to provide space heating and domestic hot water for Wiltshire Leisure Village, part of the 275 acre Wiltshire Golf & Country Club near Wootton Bassett.

Distributor Space Air has been specified to supply Daikin Altherma air-to-water heat pumps for the 44 Scandinavian-style, timber-framed holiday homes forming the first phase of the development. It is the largest installation of its type in Europe.

The development for Eddie Shah, who launched Today newspaper, will feature a host of green features — in addition to the heat pumps, there will be grey-water flushing systems, sun tubes, solar-powered ventilation and energy-saving lighting. These measures help improve on Swindon Council’s guidelines requiring at least 10% renewable energy in all new-building projects.

The decision to install Altherma heat pumps in each property follows field trials in the existing club house and Mr Shah’s own Victoria built home.

Altherma heat pumps typically achieve a COP of three. There is a small back-up electric heater for use in rare extreme winter conditions.

There are three Altherma models rated from 6.1 to 9.6 kW. They are virtually maintenance free and have the potential in the UK to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 42%.
