Cylon integrates BEMS with control of natural ventilation
Published:  July 2007

Cylon Controls has devised a system to integrate the control of natural ventilation with other HVAC equipment. Based on KNX technology, the Cylon KNX gateway allows a Cylon building-management system to control an entire building — including blinds, window opening, traditional mechanical plant and lighting.

Natural ventilation is becoming central to many building-control strategies in low-carbon design. In naturally ventilated buildings, it is necessary to be able to automatically open and close windows and, sometimes, minimise direct solar gains. Such control can be achieved by a variety of actuators communicating with a Cylon BEMS through a KNX gateway.

KNX is an economic system to install as it is based on a single 2-wire bus to provide communication with up to 64 devices.

Another feature of Cylon’s approach is the use of the standard motor interface for connecting intelligent drives for shutters, windows and solar-protection systems. It offers precise movement to intermediate positions and feedback of actual positions.
