Atlantic Boilers helps Buckingham Palace make right-royal energy savings

The replacement of shell-and-tube heat exchangers in satellite plant rooms in Buckingham with plate heat exchangers has halved distribution heat losses — and will ultimately reduce the annual energy bill by 8%. So far, Atlantic RS Turboflow plate heat exchangers have been installed in two satellite plant rooms. The remaining six will be fitted out over the next three summers. The savings are made possible by lower flow temperatures from the boilers. Shell-and-tube heat exchangers require much high flow and return temperatures from the boiler to step down to the required 85°C for space heating and 65°C for domestic hot water. Ron Harper, deputy property manager for Buckingham Palace, planned the progressive phased conversion programme for the satellite plant rooms. He explains, ‘The moves will not only substantially cut distribution energy costs, but will also allow the selection of the most innovative replacement condensing boilers for the central plant.’ The installation also makes it possible to consider the use of carbon-neutral fuels.
