Refrigeration provides space heating for Tesco store

Heat recovered from refrigerated display cabinets in a Tesco store opposite Clapham Common in London is being used as a heat source for a Versatemp heating/cooling system. The 2200 m2 store is part of a mixed development that also comprises residential outlets and basement car parking. Tesco would previously have installed electric heaters above entry doors, but felt a more energy-efficient solution could be used. Hot refrigerant gas from the refrigeration system is passed through purpose-built dry-blast coolers with integral coils incorporated into the water loop of the Versatemp system so that heat can be transferred to the Versatemp system. This heat is delivered to the space by Versatemp units operating in heat-pump mode. There are 27 Versatemp units in the ceiling void. They serve door entry areas, cold aisles and offices. Reverse-cycle units are installed in office to provide both heating and cooling. Building-services consulting engineers ACDP was responsible for the services infrastructure for the store and the residential supplies and specified Versatemp units for the store. Related articles:
