Energy costs take a dive at leisure centre in Wales
Published:  July 2007

The installation of Calorex combined heat-recovery and dehumidification units as part of the £6.85 million refurbishment of Pontypool Active Living Centre in Wales is reducing running costs by 42% compared with the previous air-handling unit. Carbon-dioxide emissions are being reduced by 51%, or 288 t per year.

The refurbishment included improvements and additions to the existing wet leisure facilities. The centre has a 25 m pool with a gallery for 200 spectators, a separate teaching pool, a popular hydro slide system and a new health suite with spa, steam room and sauna. A Calorex HRD30 serves the main pool area, with a separate TTW55 unit for the spa area. They incorporate heat-pump technology.

The unit serving the main pool was modified to incorporate a Cylon controller to enable easy integration into the building-management system and remote monitoring and diagnosis.
