Linden Homes lives up to its green name
Published:  July 2007

To help the Market Quarter residential development in Chippenham achieve the highest rating in the BREEAM-recognised EcoHomes scheme, EcoTherm rigid polyurethane insulation boards have been used for both conventional pitched roofs and an innovative ‘green’ living roof.

This development by Linden Homes will comprise 256 homes, ranging from apartments with one and two bedrooms to family homes with three and four bedrooms.

It is expected that nearly 2800 m2 of EcoTherm’s Glass-Therm rigid roofing board will be supplied by Raven Roofing Supplies to contractor Colman Roofing.

The ‘excellent’ rating EcoHomes scheme requires homes to demonstrate outstanding energy conservation, minimal pollution and a commitment to use green building materials.

EcoTherm PUR boards combine excellent thermal insulation and green credentials. No ozone-depleting chemicals are used during manufacture and the energy used during manufacture is repaid after eight months of energy saving in service. Insulation performance is retained almost indefinitely.

The Glass-Therm product selected for the Market Quarter development is particularly suitable for use with single-ply non-bituminous waterproofing membranes that are required to be fully adhered to the insulating layer.

The ‘living roof’ has a special drainage layer which is placed over the waterproof membrane. This assembly is covered in soil and seeded with grass and other plants to provide an attractive feature. It retains water after heavy rainfall, preventing drains from overflowing and provides a habit for wild flowers, butterflies and birds.
