The fire damper that can be reset with one hand — Actionair’s latest Fire/Shield.

Resetting Actionair’s latest range of Fire/Shield dampers after routine testing is a single-handed operation.

The cassette design has all the strength and fatigue resistance required, but it is light enough to reset with one hand during a periodic function test to BS 5588 Part 9 or if a heat sink in the building triggers a false alarm. These cassettes can re retrofitted to existing Fire/Shield dampers.

Setting ordinary steel-curtain fire dampers involves a complicated pull-and-lift operation, followed by holding the curtain fully open against the tension of closing springs — while attempting to replace the fusible link unsighted.

Actionair’s curtain-type fire dampers provide up to four hours of fire protection for air-conditioning and ventilation systems. The new units have a self-latching, cassette-type release mechanism incorporating new polymer technology that makes them easier to work with. Polyphenylenesulphide (PPS) is reinforce with glass to form GF-PPS. Halogen-free PPS is stable at up to 200°C. It has very low moisture absorption.

To reset a damper, each stainless-steel blade is repositioned by pushing back the latch under spring tension. Once all the blades have been pushed back, the latch springs out to secure them.

These dampers are designed for standard thermal-actuator operation, with the memory-metal coil springs designed to fully expand at 72°C and close the blades. A damper can be released by a Bowden cable or an electrical signal.
