Biomass heats, and cools, new hospitals in Wales
Published:  November 2007

Wood Energy has installed biomass boilers to provide heating for two new hospitals in Wales. A 1 MW Binder boiler has been installed at Rhondda Valley Hospital and an 850 kW Binder boiler in Ysbyty Alltwen Hospital in Porthmadog.

From the earliest stages, the NHS was interested in delivering a green solution. Wood Energy was able to demonstrate that its biomass Binder boiler could substantially reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint and significant savings in running costs.

The boiler in Rhondda Valley Hospital can also power an absorption chiller to provide air conditioning. This project cost about £300 000, and payback is estimated to be within seven years.

Both schemes can use wood pellets and wood chips of varying moisture content up to 50%.

Each boiler will use 1000 t of wood chips a year. Both installation use an hydraulic ram system to transport the wood chip from the store to the boiler, enabling larger chunks of wood to be used.
