Wellcome welcomes Star’s Indigochillers

Seven of Star Refrigeration’s energy-efficient air-cooled Indigochiller packages have replaced aging water chillers at the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus research facility near Cambridge to serve air-conditioning systems. Three 250 kW units and four 500 kW units have been installed on the roof to provide chilled water to air-handling units. serving research laboratories, general offices and the Wellcome Trust conference centre. Alistair Barns, Star Refrigeration’s building-services manager, explains, ‘Our research shows that each Indigochiller uses only 60% of the energy required by a standard chiller operating on typical load and ambient profiles. This offers end users a significant saving in energy and running costs.’ These chillers were developed in direct response to F-gas regulations covering refrigerant emissions. Their design aims to eliminate refrigerant leakage. Components are selected to minimise the risk of leakage using features such as bellows seal valves, sealed expansion valves and welded steel pipework. Leak-detection requirements have been reduced to a few simple checks. Indigochillers have oil-free turbocor centrifugal compressors operating on electro-magnetic bearings and using R134a.
