SE Controls devises intelligent smoke ventilation for Manchester project

Intelligent smoke ventilation in the event of a fire is provided for Manchester’s Skyline Central by a system designed by SE Controls.

An intelligent method of venting smoke in the event of a fire in the Skyline Central apartment and health-club complex in Manchester is provided by a system devised by SE Controls.

Skyline Central provides nearly 250 apartments in two buildings, one of 10 storeys and the other 19. The residential accommodation is topped off with a luxury spa, health club and 20 m swimming pool on the uppermost level.

The system comprises large natural-smoke shafts and automatic opening vents. They are controlled by linear and chain actuators and SE Controls’ OS2 control system. The fully integrated system integrates seamlessly with the fire-alarm and building-management system.

If a fire should start anywhere in the two buildings, the addressable smoke-detection system will immediately communicate with the OS2 control system to automatically open specific windows and roof vents to disperse smoke from the common escape routes.

Further protection is afforded to enclosed corridors throughout the accommodation blocks by automatic opening doors designed to vent smoke into the natural smoke shafts. The OS2 system manages the operation of these doors and also the roof vents at the head of the smoke shafts.

The control system is supported by battery backup to provide full operation. Manual over-ride enables firemen to open and close vents and windows as required.
