Proven technologies halve energy use of data centre

Published:  11 August, 2008

The new £44 million data centre of Fujitsu Services in north London will have only half the energy consumption of standard designs of such buildings, thanks to a design by Red Engineering.

Tried-and-tested techniques and technologies are used in new and sophisticated ways.

Evaporation towers and heat exchangers are used in preference to conventional air-conditioning systems.

Heat is recovered from the technical halls for use elsewhere.

Spray humidification uses less energy than steam humidification and also provides adiabatic cooling.

Variable-speed fans and pumps provide only the actual cooling needs of the data halls.

Back-up power is provided by a diesel rotary UPS in preference to the more conventional double-conversion UPS systems.

Finally, lighting is controlled by occupancy-based automatic systems.

This data centre is Europe’s first Tier III data centre, as certified by The Uptime Institute. This certification vindicates Red Engineering’s view that the high resilience indicated by this tier rating and low energy use are compatible.
