Zumtobel makes light work of Bristol office development

Published:  19 October, 2008

Lighting equipment supplied by Zumtobel enhances the aesthetics of the entrance reception of this office development in Bristol.

Quality light, unobtrusive fittings and easy access for maintenance were the requirements for lighting in the new Portwall Place office development in Bristol. To meet this brief, Zumtobel worked closely with the project architect.

The main entrance reception is a double-height space fronted by frameless glazing. The lighting was required to be unobtrusive to maintain the building’s clean lines while providing lighting level with highlighted areas to create interest.

A combination of Cielos modular ceiling lights with a glass exterior that produces a flat, smooth finish with even luminance across the surface was specified. These luminaires are used with the flush-mounted LightTools lighting system, fitted with the Tecton continuous-row luminaire, to provide a continuous band of light without black spots over the reception desk.

To avoid the need for tall access platforms in the double-height space, Miros spotlights are fixed to the floor edge at the mid-point of the space, with mirror reflectors on the ceiling to bounce light back to the floor. This solution aids maintenance and overcomes the problem of glare at first-floor level.

Built by developer Deeley Freed Estates and designed by AWW architects, the building is occupied by legal firm Beachcrofts, Faber Maunsell, accountant Smith & Williamson and EC Harris.
