Rehau’s largest-ever contract for its AWADUKT Thermo ground-to-air heat-exchanger system is for the new Queen Elizabeth’s School in Wimborne, being built as part of the DfES Building Schools for the Future programme.

Around 3500 m of 250 mm-diameter polypropylene pipework will be installed in grids 1.5 m below three of the school’s blocks and use the temperature of the ground to pre-heat or pre-cool ventilation air before it is delivered into the school.

The temperature of the air drawn through the network of pipes will be increased by up to 9 K in winter and reduced by as much as 14 K in winter to deliver a more comfortable environment in winter and reduce the energy needed for space heating in winter.

Dorset County Council has secured extra funding for the school to become a demonstration project for sustainable schools. The performance of the AWADUKT will be logged and ongoing savings analysed.

Main contractor is Carillion, concept architect is Feildon Clegg Bradley and consultant engineer and architect is Mouchel.
