Calor brings renewable energy to historic castle in Ireland

Published:  05 November, 2008

A gas-engine-driven heat pump using Calor LPG is bringing the benefits of renewable energy to Leslie Castle, an important historic building in Monaghan, Ireland.

The castle has been home to the Leslie family since 1665. During this time, the castleís guardian, Samantha Leslie, has worked closely with Calor, which has supplied LPG to provide space and water heating for the main building and to support catering facilities throughout the estate.

The most recent task for the Calor team was to source a heating and cooling solution for the Long Wing Gallery to replace a system installed over a hundred years ago. Modern radiators would not have been appropriate for the narrow design of the gallery, which was originally heated via underfloor grilles and through window boxes. Calor recommended a Sanyo gas heat pump, which could work with the original system and without spoiling the appearance of this section of the castle.

The refrigeration compressor is driven by a belt from the engine, which is fuelled by Calor LPG. Collecting ambient energy and recovering heat from the combustion achieves a heating efficiency of 140%-plus.

So as not to spoil the appearance of the exterior of the building, the LPG tanks have been installed underground.
