Solar energy at a new community centre in Bristol meets much of the requirement for domestic hot water.

12 solar collectors are providing pre-heated feed water for the DHW installation at Hartcliffe Community Centre in Bristol. They work alongside two Lochinvar LBF300 water heaters. During the summer, a high proportion of the demand for hot water will be provided by solar energy. Even on cloudy days, solar energy is likely to generate feed water at 25 to 35°C, reducing the energy requirement of the Lochinvar water heaters. Hartcliffe Community Centre was funded by supermarket chain Morrison as part of its investment in the community when it built a new store. The Lochinvar equipment was specified and installed by Mitton Mechanical Services. Chas Thompson, projects director with Mitton, said, ‘The community centre wanted to reduce its carbon footprint without compromising its hot-water supply. In our experience, the combined solar thermal and direct gas-fired water-heater package offered the ideal solution.’ David Pepper, Lochinvar’s managing director, explains, ‘A bespoke solar package can be provided with all of our water heaters, Working with our established solar partner, Rayotec, we provided a tailored renewable-energy solution for the centre which conserves fossil fuel and reduces carbon emissions — without compromising hot-water supply.’
