CPD models performance of natural ventilation for Tesco

The installation of Monodraught Windcatcher natural ventilation units at the Tesco Express store in Hinckley was modelled as part of the design process before installation. Tesco commissioned White Young Green’s low-carbon cities and sustainable-buildings team to carry out the modelling work. Associate director Dr Yianni Spanos was in charge of the team, which used first-principle models of heat-transfer processes and real weather data. This team has built up considerable capabilities in this area and provides thermal, energy and carbon modelling, including CFD studies, to a variety of clients. The Hinckley store reflects Tesco’s policy of all new stores having half the carbon emissions of an equivalent store built in 2006. Other energy-saving futures in this store include Monodraught Sunpipes and Suncatchers. WYG’s modelling determined that four 1000 mm-square Windcatchers would be required in the main sales area.
