Gateshead schools use Cylon BEMS as an educational tool

The Cylon BEMS serving six schools in Gateshead, including Harlow Green Primary School, makes available to pupils information about the use of renewable energy and how much carbon has been saved

Six schools in Gateshead built as part of the Building Schools for the Future programme are centrally managed by a Cylon building and energy management system. Heating, air conditioning, cooling along with photo-voltaic panels, solar water-heating and wind turbines are controlled and monitored by the Cylon system for all six schools.

The Cylon BEMS was installed by system integrator Astral Control Services and is also maintained by this company. Director Alan Jones says, ‘The Cylon BEMS offers the local authority added benefits by allowing each school to use the BEMS as an educational tool on projects such as renewable energies while having web-based remote access with no extra capital costs.’

The embedded Weblink makes information on building management available to the facilities manager and to pupils from any PC via a web browser in these schools.

A renewable-energy menu includes a description of how the solar PV panels, solar water heating and wind turbines work. The system displays the wind speed and how much electricity the wind turbines and solar panels have generated. It also shows the total reduction in carbon emissions the use of renewable energy sources has achieved.
