Heat-recovery air-handling units supplied by Ciat Ozonair for the Defence Food Services School have total access for ease of cleaning.

Designed to give quick and simple access to all components for maintenance and repair, Ciat Ozonairís Air Access air-handling units have been installed in the new Defence Food Services School at Worthy Down in Hampshire.

Air Systems SW installed the 17 units to provide general supply and extract ventilation. Each unit has a plate heat exchanger to recover heat extracted from kitchens by conventional kitchen extract hoods.

The design of these AHUs enables all M&E services to be run adjacent to or in the built-in multi-service bulkhead, leaving the removable sliding panels fully accessible along the complete access side of the units.

The total access prevents the units becoming contaminated with grease from the extract system. The heat exchangers have stainless-steel drain trays on both supply and extract sides. Isolating dampers are fitted to the inlet and outlet of each heat exchanger so that the matrix can be isolated from the air flow for cleaning.

Each AHU handles an extract volume of 3 m3/s on both supply and extract and recovers 55 kW of heat from the kitchen extract system. At maximum capacity, 935 kW of heat is recovered by the AHUs. Plug fans are controlled by frequency inverters.
