New boilers put less energy into heating Truro Cathedral

Hamworthy Heaters

New Hamworthy boilers in Truro Cathedral have cut gas consumption by 30%

Gas consumption at Truro Cathedral has been cut by 30% following the installation of five Hamworthy Heating Milborne wall-hung condensing boilers. They have a total output of 500 kW and serve radiators, fan convectors and air-handling units.

A fifth Milborne boiler heats the coffee shop and restaurant.

Gareth Jones of GPJ Consulting Engineers of Camborne, says, ‘The installation has already reduced the Cathedral’s heating costs significantly, but in particular electricity costs will be much lower. This is because the previous systems used powerful flue-dilution fans which ran continuously regardless of whether or not the boilers were working. [The new boilers are open vented.] With a building such as this, the right heating system was paramount in making it comfortable without increasing energy consumption.’

The boilers were installed by Applied Pipework Services of Hayle and have modulating pre-mix burners that achieve European Class 5 specification for NOx emissions at less than 40 mg/kWh.
