SAV LoadTracker CHP serves retirement village

Published:  10 September, 2009

100% usage of all energy from the SAV LoadTracker CHP system at the retirement village is used in the central building, with no electricity exported to the grid.

SAVís LoadTracker CHP system provides electricity, space heating and hot water for the main building in the Bramshott Place Village retirement development at Liphook in Hampshire. One of the features of this system is that electricity not required for electrical services is used to drive a heat pump ó so there is no need to export electricity to the grid at what could be an uneconomic cost.

Apartments and cottages provide 147 homes centred on a country club. Central facilities include a health centre and pool, bar and restaurant and the spacious atrium winter garden.

The LoadTracker unit is based on a Toyota gas-fired engine. It can provide 6 to 15 kW of electricity and 17 to 30 kW of heating. Electricity is used for power and lighting in the main building and matched to requirements over each 24 h day. Modulating control ensures that all electrical energy generated is used.

Heat from the miniCHP is used to heat water in a thermal store via a heat exchanger. Water is stored at 80įC and can be drawn off to provide heating and DHW and also to contribute to heating the swimming pool.

Data from the daily operation of the CHP system can be read on site and is also transmitted via the Internet to the monitoring station in Denmark that is operated by SAV Systems for all EC Power CHP projects.
