DHW heaters serve underfloor heating

Published:  12 October, 2009

Timoleon underfloor heating in a new building in Wales is unusually served by a hot-water heater

Rather than domestic hot water being provided as a by-product of space heating, an adventure centre in Wales has its space-heating requirements met as a by-product of domestic hot water. Hot water for the Timoleon underfloor heating system at Morfa Bay Adventure in Carmarthenshire is provided by the Andrews direct-fired water heaters that serve 10 new showers. A plate heat exchanger provides an interface, and the water is supplied at 40°C.

The underfloor heating is in a new 116 m2 building that provides additional changing and shower facilities for guests, plus an office and large multi-purpose area.

The solid floor has loops of Timoleon pipework fixed in position on Metis ClipPlates above a layer of insulation material.

Metis ClipPlates have 10 mm of expanded polystyrene integrated beneath each plate to guard against deformation; the polystyrene also provides extra insulation. The interlocking system holds the plates firmly together, making them well suited to liquid screeds.

For control purposes, the system is divided into three zones, with the water to each zone modulated in response to individual room thermostats.
