Major award for Cofely trigeneration scheme at MediaCityUK in Salford
Published: January 2010
Cofely has designed, installed and commissioned a trigeneration system and energy centre for MediaCityUK on Salford’s historic docks. The scheme has won the industrial and commercial award from the Combined Heat & Power Association. MediaCityUK is a new community for the creative and digital industries. Anchor tenants include the BBC and the University of Salford. The first phase covers more 15 ha. Its energy centre includes a 2 MW CHP unit fuelled by gas/biofuel. During the summer, heat drives a 1.5 MW absorption chiller, which is expected to meet 20% of the cooling load and be supplemented by chillers in the individual buildings. The CHP unit will reduce carbon emissions by 29% compared with conventional methods, with predicted energy-cost savings of £560 000 a year.
