One of the most visited churches in England, St Mary’s in Oxford, is now heated by three Hamworthy condensing boilers as part of a £5 million refurbishment programme.

St Mary’s Church in the heart of the walled city of Oxford has recently had its heating system updated with the installation of three Hamworthy Purewell VariHeat 180c condensing boilers. The work is part of a planned £5 million refurbishment programme for this Grade 1 listed building. The boilers were specified by Hoare Lea of Bristol and installed by Lawton BES.

Eddie Duggan, contract manager with Lawton BES, explains, ‘The plantroom is in a cellar with a low ceiling height, so the Hamworthy team dismantled the boilers and then reassembled them on site.’

The new boilers supply up to 540 kW of heat to the church, offices, cafeteria and tourist centre through a sealed system via radiators, fan-coil units and heating coils. They are controlled in sequence.

VariHeat boilers are designed as a direct replacement for cast-iron atmospheric boilers and are tolerant of older systems. There are five condensing models with outputs from 70 to 180 kW and four non-condensing models with outputs from 65 to 125 kW.
