London college is heated by rapeseed oil

Boilers burning rapeseed oil have been installed in a college in east London to provide space heating. Supplied by Atlantic Boilers, they can both deliver 22.4 kW and operate all year in condensing mode to achieve seasonal efficiencies greater than 94% gross. The Building Crafts College in Stratford was founded in 1893 by the Carpenter’s Company and is now a Government-sponsored centre of vocational excellence for teaching and craftsmanship in carpentry, stone masonry and joinery. The workshops served by the boilers are highly insulated. The oil is stored in a heated tank, where it is maintained above 5°C and continuously circulated to the built-in pre-heat tanks of the boilers, where its temperature is raised to 60°C. Finally, the oil temperature is raised in the burner heads to ignition temperature. Consulting engineers were Gary L. Jones of Southampton. The boilers were installed by Brith Services.
