ABB swappage scheme for drives boosts recycling
Published:  August 2010
ABB, motors, drives, swappage

The recycling programme that supports ABB’s swappage scheme has this year recycled 13 t of waste variable-speed drives, recovering over 90% of their component materials by weight. The swappage scheme offers at least 17.5% off the list price of a new ABB drive and will swap out incumbent drives from any manufacturer.

Scrapped drives are recycled according to the WEEE Directive, even though most drives are not covered by it. ABB issues a certificate that can be used for environmental audits by end users complying with ISO 14001.

Each ABB partner has a dedicated bin for recycling drives. There is also a bin at ABB’s repair centre for dives at St Neots.

Current ABB drives are over 10% more efficient than its most popular drive from the 1980s.
