Nick Clegg opens Sheffield solar farm

Sheffield University, Solar Energy

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg gets first-hand experience of solar photo-voltaics technology as he opens the new solar farm on the roof of Sheffield University’s Hicks Building. The panels will produce electricity for the building itself, with excess power being fed into the National Grid to earn money from the feed-in tariff and the generation tariff. This solar array is also being used to test new and experimental designs.

The 70 m2 of monocrystalline silicon solar PV panels were supplied by Sharp Solar. They are expected to generate about 8MWh of electricity a year.

This project is part of Project Sunshine, which aims to harness the power of the Sun to tackle the increasing food and energy needs of the world’s population in light of uncertain climate and global environment change. It will enable the solar-panel community to interact closely with new research and identify how solar panels perform in UK latitudes.
