Multi-service beams contribute to building’s green credentials

Trox UK, multi-service chilled beam

Active exposed multi-service chilled beams for a building on Cardiff Waterside (they can be seen behind the glass at the back of the atrium) appear to float in space.

Trox active multi-service chilled beams with architect-inspired design elements and a host of special features for energy efficiency and occupier comfort have been installed in one of the greenest commercial buildings in Wales. 3 Assembly Square on Cardiff Waterside has a BREEAM (2006) ‘Excellent’ rating, with a score of 75.52, six months ahead of completion.

Design features of this 6150 m2 building include a biomass boiler, enhanced insulation and rainwater harvesting.

The need for outstanding energy efficiency also influenced the design of the multi-service chilled beams, which incorporate a lighting-management system, with PIR sensors, to control lighting according to room occupancy and available daylight. Prismatic lenses provide accurate control of light distribution.

The beams also provide heating and cooling.

To enhance the architectural intentions for the space, the beams are made with specially designed side panels. The resulting T-shaped beams and black perforated side panels give the impression that the beams are floating in space.

The project team was able to see the aesthetic impact of the beam and analyse aspects of its technical performance at Trox’s test laboratory.
