SES thinks local to reduce project’s carbon footprint

Efforts by building-services company Shepherd Engineering Services to reduce the carbon footprint of a contract to install M&E services in the new West Yorkshire Police Scientific Support Unit include 70% of its own staff and sub-contractors working on the project living within 15 miles of the site. The company will also build many of the services modules offsite at its Prism facility before transporting them to site.

Lee Taylor, operations director for the company in Sheffield, says, ‘We’re confident that we will not only help build a sustainable building for West Yorkshire Police, but compared to a traditional installation of this type, we will reduce our own carbon footprint by 50%.’

The 7500 m2 building is due to open at the end of 2011 and will include laboratories, open-plan offices, training facilities, imaging studios, photography rooms, dining area and space for extensive document storage.

Services will include ground-source heat pumps for heating and cooling, rainwater harvesting for flushing toilets and an intelligent building-management system to maintain optimum conditions and monitor carbon emissions.
