Biomass boiler is part of council’s carbon-management plan

This 174 kW biomass boiler from MHS boilers has replaced three gas-fired boilers in a North Yorkshire primary school.

As part of Redcar and Cleveland’s plans to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2014, three aging gas-fed boilers in Highcliffe Primary School in Guisborough have been replaced by a 174 kW biomass boiler. Supplied by MHS Boilers, the Combustor C boiler provides heating and hot water.

This boiler burns wood pellets which are automatically supplied from a 4 t hopper in an adjacent storeroom.

To provide backup during downtime and periods of peak heating loads, a gas boiler is connected to the installation via a plate heat exchanger with an extended shunt header system through underground pipework. Additional energy metering has been installed, and ash from the biomass boiler will be used as fertiliser in the ground’s cultivation area.

M&E consultant for the project was Parsec Consulting Engineers of Darlington, and the work was carried out by Geoffrey Robinson Ltd.
