Chilled beams provide efficient comfort for hospital building

Chilled beams from Waterloo Air Products will provide energy-efficient heating and cooling for the new Manchester & Salford Pain Centre.

Low-energy cooling and heating for the new Pain Centre at Salford Royal Hospital is provided by chilled beams supplied by Waterloo Air Products. The Manchester & Salford Pain Centre is on a new purpose-built extension to the existing Irvine Building and is part of an extensive building programme being phased over five years.

As a designated low-energy project, energy and running costs, combined with aesthetic considerations, were drivers for the Pain Centre’s fit-out — in addition to comfort for patients and staff. Consulting engineers AECOM specified chilled beams for their energy efficiency, low noise levels and comfort benefits.

Waterloo active chilled beams and devices were selected and fitted by CMB Fylde Engineering into every room to provide heating and cooling.

According to Waterloo, chilled beams can have as little as half the energy consumption of a traditional air-conditioning system, depending on the type of system, climate and building.
