M&S store is on course to cut energy use by 30%
Electricity savings of 26% are being achieved at Marks & Spencer’s Barton Square Store in Manchester’s Trafford Centre following a comprehensive energy-saving programme carried out by energy-management company NCS over five weeks. The store continued to operate as usual. The return on investment in currently running at 3.1 years, and remote monitoring to achieve good control and management is expected to increase the savings for this all-electric store to 30%.
The store’s lighting system was one of the main consumers of energy and has been comprehensively redesigned and updated to include presence and lux controls. Intelligent controls based on the NCS Engenia Platform include automated stocking and trading levels with links to the remote monitoring centre and the burglar-alarm system to disable all lighting when it is armed. Over-rides are limited to an hour before resetting back to auto.
Upgrades to the BMS ensure that all HVAC systems are fully optimised and compensated.
All stand-alone systems such as fan coils and air-conditioning units are connected to the BMS so they can be centrally controlled.
New hand driers are significantly more efficient than the previous units and enabled all paper-towel dispensers to be removed.
Pushbutton and sensor-controlled taps are fitted to all staff and customer sinks.
The solar thermal system is now working again, having previously been decommissioned because of a fault.
The contract had a designated project manager and commissioning team which completed the final handover to the store and its regional management teams.
The store management and operations staff were given a full handover and explanation of what was installed and how it was set up so they can maintain the savings being achieved.
