System Hygienics has successfully cleaned hospital ventilation ductwork serving 18 operating theatres at two hospitals in Glasgow. They are Gartnavel General Hospital and the Western Infirmary. Scheduling work mainly at weekends minimised disruption during the 6-week project.

The ductwork was cleaned and disinfected using Systems Hygienics’ Jetvent powervac system. It uses compressed air and a powerful filtered vacuum to access and clean areas that would normally be out of range. The system enables up to 50 m of ductwork to be reached from a single point.

Once cleaning work was finished, micro-biological samples were taken to confirm that the ductwork was clean enough to meet current standards.

Reports containing before-and-after photographs, certificates of analysis from micro-biological samples and a certificate of cleanliness were produced to confirm that the systems had ben cleaned in accordance with B&ES TR/19 standards and to meet the Department of Health’s Technical Memorandum 03-01 ‘Specialised ventilation in healthcare premises’.

The project also included cleaning around 20 toilet extract systems at the two hospitals. Fire dampers were also tested to ensure compliance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the BS 9999:2008 Annex W1.
