Airedale overcomes space restrictions and noise issues for airport hotel

An Airedale air-cooled chiller system serving this new hotel at Stansted Airport overcomes severe space and noise restrictions.
To overcome space pressures and achieve low noise levels for air conditioning serving the Radisson SAS Hotel at Stansted Airport, Airedale has supplied two super-quiet Ultima remote air-cooled chillers. They were specially designed to fit into a restricted space on the ground floor, which offered insufficient room for a chiller with air discharge from the top. Since the hotel bedrooms are situated above the ground floor, where the cooling system is installed, and flights are restricted at night, it was crucial to design for low noise levels. This £50 million world-class hotel has 500 bedrooms and 26 state-of-the-art meeting rooms. A split air-cooled chiller system presented a viable solution and provides 1700 kW of cooling. Vertical-coil condensers in a dedicated louvre enclosure were designed and made for this project by heat-exchanger manufacturer Guntner and make a significant contribution to meeting space and sound criteria. Variable fan-speed controllers are used inside the remote condenser panels, coupled with individual electronic fan-noise filters. — ensuring low fan speeds and low noise for night-time operation. Paul Oliver, Airedale’s UK sales director, says, ‘The Radisson is a good example of manufacturers working with contractors to provide a solution. In partnership with Gunter and M&E design-and-build contractor Gratte Brothers, we made the cooling requirement work by reducing the footprint and designing a one-off split-chiller system for the client, with two chillers each providing 850 kW of cooling within restricted parameters. Quality was of the highest order, despite opening timescales presenting rigorous deadlines.’
