Priva helps to take control of energy costs in Northern Ireland hotel

Helping to achieve electricity savings of nearly £10 500 in its first three months of operation at the Maldron Hotel Derry in Northern Ireland is the Priva Blue ID building-automation solution. This 90-room hotel has a restaurant, bar and grill, 300-delegate conference theatre, banqueting suite, mini gym and sauna.

The hotel wanted to update the control panels for its boiler house and AHUs to the latest technologies to help significantly improve energy efficiency. The hotel’s owner engaged the help of building-services consultant Beers Engineering and M&E contractor Pipeline Services of Belfast to provide the solution and strategy to meet the project objectives.

The existing control panels serving the bar, function rooms, restaurant and kitchen areas were manually operated and outdated. ACS Controls was engaged to deliver the controls strategy, which selected Priva’s Blue ID for the project as a modular solution that is quick and easy to install and program.

ACS designed the front-end of the system with ‘non-engineers’ in mind, making them simple to use by all front-of-house staff. Access to the system is via a web browser on a computer to provide access to a web server in each controller. Each controlled has its own IP address, but access to one controller provides access to all the others.

General manager at the hotel, Mike Gatt, said, ‘The new equipment establishes best practice at the hotel in terms of relating energy consumption to occupancy and reliability of supply. The fact that this was achieved with the project fully funded by the Carbon Trust interest-free loan scheme is a testament to the technology’s potential in terms of cost and environmental savings.’ He confirmed that the project is on track to achieve a payback of less than four years.
