New boilers and services help Co-op store reduce energy consumption by 12%

New Atag Commercial boilers installed at the Co-op store in Stockbridge near Sheffield are reducing energy consumption by 12%, according to initial feedback. The cost of the project is expected to be paid back in just over five years, helped by lower reactive maintenance costs.

The store’s old system comprised a warm-air unit in the ceiling void serving the checkout area, an electric door curtain over the main entrance, and a combined gas-fired and direct-expansion air-handling unit serving the main store. Hot water was provided by a direct cylinder with two 6 kW immersion heaters.

Difficult access for servicing these various system elements resulted in high maintenance costs, and overall energy consumption was high.

The Co-op’s facilities-management team, headed by Brendan Laing examined numerous options. the new system is based around two Atag XL140 gas-fired boilers supplied by Atag Commercial and installed by Climate Heating & Plumbing Services, the main contractor for the work.

These boilers have stainless-steel heat exchangers, seamless upwards modulation and NOx emissions below 30 ppm.

The boilers deliver hot water to a new LPHW air-handling system serving the main store area and a new LPHW warm-air door curtain above the main entrance.

An Atag unvented indirect system with a capacity of 700 l has replaced the previous hot-water system.

Modifications were made to existing ductwork and also to pipework to provide a secondary return with thermostatic mixing valves fitted to all outlets.

The boilers are frame mounted in line and were supplied with low-loss header, pressurisation unit and expansion vessel.

To enable the store’s management to monitor the performance of the heating and hot-water systems and make adjustments ,a remote monitoring and control system was installed.
