Breathing Buildings’ low energy ventilation for new YMCA nursery

Breathing Buildings, hybrid ventilation

Breathing Buildings has supplied its controlled hybrid ventilation system for East Yanton YMCA nursery. The project was originally designed for mechanical ventilation, but the client had concerns about the energy use and maintenance.

Breathing Buildings was approached by Darcy Construction to design a natural ventilation system that would be unobtrusive and provide high levels of ventilation to keep rooms fresh.

The solution includes an F1000 unit with the balancing flow path via a louvre and damper at high level. In cold weather, heat from solar gain is recycled to pre-heat incoming air. In summer, the system automatically makes use of night cooling. The fabric of the building is passively cooled, alleviating the need to air condition the south-facing nursery. The slimline unit is neatly tucked against the ceiling and provides a throw of up to 10m into the space.
