PIR controllers help reduce lighting energy and maintenance costs

Restored to new glory — Birmingham’s Fort Dunlop uses PIR presence detectors from CP Electronics to provide energy-efficient lighting control.

Lighting at Birmingham’s reinvented Fort Dunlop incorporates ceiling-mounted PIR presence detectors from CP Electronics with a special finish.

Built in 1916, Fort Dunlop stood empty for 25 years. It has been redeveloped by Urban Splash and comprises contemporary office space, independent retail and leisure outlets and a 100-bed hotel. It is topped by the UK’s largest living green roof.

One of the challenges facing M&E contractor Mitie Engineering Services was to make services fit the style and layout of the building. Light fittings, for example, had to have a black finish, as did the presence detectors, which incorporate timer and light-level control.

Mitie’s Tony Bates says, ‘Energy efficiency was very important for this project, and we were looking for PIR detectors that would give us the functionality we needed at a sensible price. CP not only provided the right products, they also delivered a high level of support throughout the projects.’

Controlling lighting in this way will prolong the life of the lamps, resulting in extended relamping cycles and reduced maintenance costs. There will also be fewer lamps to dispose of.
