The presentation coincided with the twentieth anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, which calls for a global-elimination of ozone-depleting substances such as R11 and R12 that used to be used in air-conditioning systems and HCFCs such as R22.
In 1994, Carrier became the first company to phase out CFCs from air-conditioning systems worldwide — two years ahead of requirements in the USA and 16 years ahead of mandates in developing countries.
In 1996, Carrier was first to offer non-ozone-depleting commercial and residential systems, and has since sold three million Puron residential systems in North America.
In 2005, Carrier introduced the Evergreen 23XRV variable-speed screw chiller using non-ozone-depleting HFC134a refrigerant.
Bob Meyers of the EPA’s Office of Air & Radiation, said, ‘Environmental leading companies like Carrier demonstrate that global environmental protection can go hand in hand with economic gain. The 2007 Best-of-the-best Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award winner has demonstrated sustained commitment to protection of our global environment.’
