Integrating heat recovery, heating and cooling for a new building at this hospital in Finland into Flakt Woods EU Air-handling units halved the energy consumption of a new building compared to an older one.

A 50% difference between the energy consumption of old and new hospital buildings at the Turku University Hospital (TYKS) in Finland has been attributed the installation of 50 Flakt Woods EU air-handling units to integrate all energy functions, such as heat recovery, heating and cooling.

Faced with these figures for energy consumption, the district-heating supplier visited the hospital because he thought something was wrong with the controls as a result of the low energy use. However, the readings were correct, and the supplier had to install smaller measuring instruments.

50 EU units based on the Econet concept were installed in 2004, and Flakt Woods has since been asked to supply an additional 78 units.

Craig MacFadyen, the company’s UK business development manager, says, ‘Increasing energy prices make energy efficiency more and more important. Econet is an excellent solution for hospitals and other service buildings that are open 24/7. Energy efficiency is an important factor in order to gain as low life-cycle costs as possible. The combination of Flakt Woods EU air-handling units and Econet achieves the optimum investment for the Turku University Hospital.’
